Role and Facility Information
Dease Lake is located in one of the most spectacular wilderness areas remaining in BC. We provide family medicine and emergency services to remote northern BC. Patients requiring admission/ further workup are transferred to higher level of care. Dease Lake offers some of the province’s very best fishing, hunting, hiking, camping and boating. In the winter there is snow showing, cross country skiing, skating and ice fishing. You can easily be on call while enjoying some of the province’s best outdoor recreation.

About the Clinic
Clinic Description
Clinic Composition
MDs, RNs, and lab/X-Ray technician. 2 full time MOAs. Each MD has own exam room. 1 large EM resuscitation room, 1 separate negative pressure room. Paramedics on site. Outreach to Iskut (1 day/week) and Telegraph Creek (2 days/week with 1 overnight).
Local Resources
We have a local mental health services team as well as outreach psychiatry. We have in house lab and X-Ray in Dease Lake. PT is generally virtual, otherwise in person PT / OT is accessed in person in Terrace, BC.
Emergency Framework
Resuscitation/emergency room equipped with advanced airway equipment, ventilator, defibrillator, AirVo and high quality bedside POC ultrasound among other emergency equipment. Fully equipped maternity room for emergency (no planned deliveries).
Call Expectations
1:2 to 1:3, flex depending on locum interest. Call is 24 hrs (08:30-08:30). Patient Transfer Network / BC EHS help with emergency transfers from Dease Lake to Mill’s Memorial Hospital depending on the clinical indication for transfer.

Visiting Specialist/Consultant Information
We have visiting IM and Psych to each community. Dentist that visits regularly. Our closet referral hospital has support from IM, peds, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, obs/gyn, urology, plastic surgery, otolaryngology, anesthesia and radiology.

EMR System
We use MOIS for our EMR. We book off ample time for new locums for MOIS training if required.
What training is provided for the EMR System
There is excellent training and support from local physicians as well as virtual IT.
Level of Support/Care and Policy
Welcoming Procedures
Clean and fully furnished locum housing is provided and ready for locum arrival. Time is booked off on the first day for new locums for orientation on site at the Stikine Health Centre. If flying in, you will be picked up from the airport by clinic staff. There is often a welcome potluck dinner on the night of arrival for new and returning locums.
Orientation
Orientation takes place at the Stikine Health Centre. The other local physician will orient the new locum. Also the nurse manager will provide additional orientation.
Social Involvement
There are regular community events in each of the communities depending on the time of year. Recreation is often focused around outdoor activities such as cross country skiing, snow showing, ice fishing, skating, fishing, hiking, swimming, sauna, hunting, etc. We hope that any locum will join in on community and social events. We often hold barbecues or dinner parties at our health centre or our homes as well.
Clinic Policy
We do not admit any patients at the Stikine Health Centre. Any patient requiring admission or investigation at higher level of care must be transferred.
Accommodation and Transportation
The clinic does provide accommodation.
Accommodation Description
Clean, private, furnished locum housing with full kitchen, laundry, TV, private phone, and WIFI. Some houses have a workout area in the basement. Work-out facility can be accessed 24/7 at clinic as can a brand new fully equipped gym in the community.
Most Convenient Mode of Transportation
Mining flights run T/W/Th from multiple cities direct to Dease Lake for healthcare workers. Driving from Terrace/Smithers/Whitehorse is 6-7 hours (RGPLP reimbursement for rental car/miles). Clinic vehicles in Dease Lake available for work/leisure.

Community Centre
We have a community hall that hosts local events throughout the year. There is also a brand new gym with beautiful equipment in the BC Services Building, free for use by the community.

Gas station, post office, library, and local eateries including The Shack, Nympha’s Asian Food Eatery and Northway Pizzeria. In winter months we have an ice rink and X-country ski tracks. There is an outdoor wood-burning sauna for healthcare workers.
