RGPALP - GP with Anesthesia needed for St. John Hospital

Role and Facility Information

Vanderhoof is actively seeking locum anaesthetists who can provide relief and support for the OR and for after-hours anaesthesia on call coverage for St. John Hospital.

We can be flexible and will work to create mutually convenient schedules with interested locums. Willing to pre-book up until the end of 2026.

As of July 15th, 2026, the hospital will be down to one full-time GPA. Without locum support, key services requiring anaesthesia will be impacted.

About the Clinic

Clinic Composition

Omineca Medical Clinic is a rural family practice in Vanderhoof with 12 physicians and a 15-member support team. As a UBC teaching site, it hosts residents & students, & its physicians provide family medicine & specialty services at St. John Hospital

Local Resources

St John Hospital: Lab, Maternity, Blood Bank, X-ray, Ultrasound, Visiting Mammography, surgery, endoscopy services, oncology, a full complement of allied health professionals in the interprofessional team. EST clinics have resumed as of Apr 2026

Emergency Framework

St. John Hospital ER operates 24/7 with 12-hour day and night physician shifts, typically one doctor on duty. It also has daily anaesthesia, surgical, and OB call coverage, plus ambulance and air/virtual support via RTVS and Northern Health RACE.

Call Expectations

Variable depending on the type of call and the number of available physicians in community. We can be flexible in arranging mutually convenient locum assignments.

CME Schedule

There are regular cme sessions held at the regular weekly Tuesday physician lunch meetings. There are many other opportunities to engage in other cme activities as they arise.

Visiting Specialist/Consultant Information

Vanderhoof has visiting surgeons at SJH including ortho, ENT, plastics, general surg, & OB/GYN. Geriatric Outreach visits 4x/year. Some specialists provide telehealth/Zoom clinics at the clinic. EST is supported by a visiting internist/respirologist.

In-person MOIS training can be arranged through our Practice Support Coach or through our EMR vendor, Bright Health.

Welcoming Procedures

Visiting locums are well-supported and welcomed to the community. The office manager at the clinic will handle many of the arrangements and logistics including scheduling, accommodations, and orientations. New locums will receive a welcome gift from the facility engagement team. The Vanderhoof medical community is very collegial and friendly.

Orientation

New locums are offered an orientation to the relevant hospital department by one of the current physicians. If the locum is going to work at the Omineca Medical Clinic, we arrange EMR training and assist in welcoming new physicians to the office.

Social Involvement

The Vanderhoof physicians and the staff at St. John Hospital are very friendly and supportive to locums. Most locums have had very positive experiences in Vanderhoof. The team is collegial and welcoming. As a teaching site, Vanderhoof often has an R1 and an R2 Resident and many medical students from the NMP who come to do electives. For a small rural community, there are many social and recreational opportunities to take part in.

Accommodation Description

The NH locum house is centrally located near shops, restaurants, banks, and other amenities. It is a fully furnished two-bedroom home with laundry, Wi-Fi, a garage, and a private backyard deck. Northern Health provides housekeeping and cleaning.

Most Convenient Mode of Transportation

Fly via WestJet or Air Canada to Prince George Regional Airport, where car rentals are available. Vanderhoof is a 108 km drive via Highway 16. Local bus service is limited. VIA Rail connects Prince George and Prince Rupert.

Grocery Store

There are two main grocery stores – the Vanderhoof Co-op and the Your Independent Grocer. Costco, Walmart, and Superstore and other “big box” retailers are available in Prince George (60 min drive).

Community Centre

Integris Community Centre is in downtown Vanderhoof. It offers a new pool, ice arena, bike and walking trails, tennis courts, skateboard park, gym, & extensive trail network, plus a library, active arts, faith groups, & community organizations.

Vanderhoof has CIBC, RBC, & a credit union.

Dining includes pizza, Indian, sushi, German, pub fare, bakery, coffee, fast food, ice cream, and a summer farmers market with local stores.
