Role and Facility Information
Primary care practice (APP) with integrated urgent care / rural emergency department. On-site multidisciplinary team includes a Primary Care Nurse and Mental Health / Social Worker. Diagnostics include on-site POCT for urgent care and scheduled outpatient lab services. Supports clinic appointments (Mon–Thu/Fri, 08:30–16:30), home visits, and community programs. EMR: IHealth (Cerner). Rural FP teaching site for 3rd-year UBC medical students.
Schedule & Call: Low-volume MOCAP on-call (Sun 21:00 – Thu 16:30) for local emergencies with local paramedics. Choice of 4 or 5 clinic days/week.
Minimum 5-day commitment, with flexibility to extend. Dates are flexible.

About the Clinic
Clinic Description
Clinic Composition
2 part-time physicians, dedicated MOAs, remote-certified RNs with emergency skills, on-site MH/social worker, lab tech for scheduled draws, plus visiting dietitian & diabetes nurse, physiotherapist, and public health nursing.
Local Resources
On-site POCT (i-STAT Chem8/Trop/VBG, urine, ECG); scheduled outpatient lab draw (send-out). Higher level of care & imaging via Port McNeill/Port Hardy ERs, or Campbell River for IM and surgical consults.
Emergency Framework
Local BCEHS ambulance station. Ground transfers to Port McNeill, Port Hardy, or Campbell River. Helicopter air ambulance evacuation supported via on-site helipad through PTN coordination.
Call Expectations
Low-volume MOCAP on-call from Sun 21:00 to Thu 16:30. Covers daytime urgent care and after-hours 911 calls for local medical emergencies following remote-certified RN triage.

Specialist referrals are directed to regional consultants in Campbell River. Local referral pathways, forms, and workflows can be reviewed with clinic MOAs.

What training is provided for the EMR System
Morning orientation on day 1 - virtual training for EMR setup. Fully activated Island Health Cerner IHealth site (same EMR as hospitals). CPOE is active on the domain but not utilized locally.

Welcoming Procedures
Pre-arrival email introduction with local contacts and key clinic info provided in advance. Clinic opens at 08:30 on Monday morning. On-site MOA team and multidisciplinary clinical staff will welcome you upon arrival, introduce you to the clinic layout, and assist with settling in for your first day.
Orientation
Island Health credentialing is required. Pre-arrival coordination is provided for Cerner (IHealth) EMR access and virtual EHR training if needed. Day 1 includes an in-person morning orientation with on-site staff covering clinic workflows, facility tour, and local system navigation.
Social Involvement
Quiet rural lifestyle with no expectations for after-hours community or social involvement. Ideal for locums seeking peaceful downtime.
Clinic Policy
Port Alice Health Centre is an Island Health Authority owned and operated primary care facility. All APP physicians, locum physicians, and clinic staff practice in accordance with standard Island Health Authority clinical and operational policies, procedures, and guidelines.
