Our team provides regular clinic, emergency and inpatient care under one roof to a primarily First Nations, Heiltsuk Nation community of approximately 1500 people. The hospital, overlooking the ocean, is in the center of this rural and remote community and is a focal point for community life in many ways. Supportive team ethos. Applicants will require ACLS, ATLS and PALS certification to work in Emergency. If any of the certifications have expired, CARE certification can replace the expired certification. About the Clinic
Clinic Description
Clinic Composition
Six physicians, all part time. Staffing at 3 – 4 physicians per day. Four doctors/patient exam rooms. The ƛúxválásu'ailas Heiltsuk Hospital has 5 acute beds, 7 continuing care beds and a 4-bed emergency department open 24/7.

Emergency Framework
Nurses will call you when needed. Support from Real-Time Virtual Support service. Medivac to Lower Mainland when needed. Strong team ethos: if you need more support, just call.
Call Expectations
24-hour shifts, 1:4 or 1:3. We try to avoid people doing more than one consecutive shift. Morning off following ER shift.
ER shift patient numbers are variable but it’s not unusual to get an uninterrupted night’s sleep.

Excellent, up-to-date physician support website that any user can edit (a wiki), full of information for new locums about how things work, what services we have, how our equipment works, our accommodation, recreational opportunities, and much more. Contact us if you’d like to have a look before signing up.
You will be met at the airport if possible, and taken to the hospital and your accommodation. The regular doctors will be pleased to welcome you and show you around.
Orientation
On-site full orientation on first day (morning) with EMR training.
Physician rounds every weekday morning provide further support.

Social Involvement
Invitations to community events. We try to take our locums out for dinner at the pub/restaurant in Shearwater (a short seabus ride away) while you’re here.

The clinic does provide accommodation.
Accommodation Description
$60/night billed directly to RGPLP. Kitchen, bedding, laundry, TV, internet, landline. Generally pet-free: please contact Cindy Aronson if you want to bring a pet.
Good mobile phone reception in Bella Bella.
Most Convenient Mode of Transportation
Pacific Coastal Airlines from YVR South or BC Ferries.
There are no rental cars in Bella Bella — you can walk everywhere.

Grocery Store
Closes at 5:00 pm. Reasonable stock but consider bringing your own specialty foods if you have any dietary restrictions or wishes. Stock arrives once a week by ferry.

Bar/restaurant, grocery store (with a different selection), hardware store and a novelty store in Shearwater, a short and enjoyable seabus ride away.

Electric mountain bikes and kayaks are available for use at no charge. Fishing, hiking, ocean views. We see humpback whales, seals and bald eagles from the hospital windows.
