Role and Facility Information
Dease Lake is located in one of the most spectacular wilderness areas remaining in BC. Locums can fly directly into Dease Lake from Vancouver, Prince George, Smithers, Calgary, Kelowna, Kamloops and Nanaimo. We provide family medicine and emergency services to remote northern BC. Patients requiring admission/ further workup are transferred to higher level of care. Dease Lake offers some of the province’s very best fishing, hunting, hiking, camping and boating. In the winter there is snow showing, cross country skiing, skating and ice fishing. You can easily be on call while enjoying some of the province’s best outdoor recreation.

About the Clinic
Clinic Description
Clinic Composition
MDs, RNs, & lab/X-Ray technician. 2 fulltime MOAs. Each MD has own exam room. 1 large EM resuscitation room, 1 separate isolation negative pressure room. Paramedics onsite. Outreach to Iskut (1 day/week) & Telegraph Creek (2 days/week w/1 overnight).
Local Resources
We have a local mental health services team as well as outreach psychiatry. We have in house lab and X-Ray in Dease Lake. PT is generally virtual, otherwise in person PT / OT is accessed in person in Terrace, BC.
Emergency Framework
Resuscitation/ER is equipped w/ advance airway equipment, transport ventilator, defibrillator, AirVo & high quality bedside point of care ultrasound among other ER equipment. Fully equipped maternity room available for ER only (no planned deliveries)
Call Expectations
1:2 to 1:3, flex depending on locum interest. Call is 24 hrs (08:30-08:30). Patient Transfer Network / BC EHS help with emergency transfers from Dease Lake to Mill’s Memorial Hospital depending on the clinical indication for transfer.
Visiting Specialist/Consultant Information
We have visiting psych & a regular dentist. Our nearest referral hospital offers support in IM, peds, gen surgery, ortho, OBGYN, urology, plastics, ENT, anesth, & radiology. SHC & outreach Nursing Stations assist w/ virtual specialist appointments

EMR System
We use MOIS for our EMR. We book off ample time for new locums for MOIS training if required.
What training is provided for the EMR System
There is excellent training and support from local physicians as well as virtual IT.
Level of Support/Care and Policy
Welcoming Procedures
Clean and fully furnished locum housing is provided and ready for locum arrival. Time is booked off on the first day for new locums for orientation on site at the Stikine Health Centre.
Orientation
Orientation takes place at the Stikine Health Centre. The other local physician will orient the new locum. Also the nurse manager will provide additional orientation.
Social Involvement
There are regular community events in each of the communities depending on the time of year. Recreation is often focused around outdoor activities such as cross country skiing, snow showing, ice fishing, skating, fishing, hiking, swimming, sauna, hunting, etc. We hope that any locum will join in on community and social events. We often hold barbecues or dinner parties at our health centre as well.
Clinic Policy
We do not admit any patients at the Stikine Health Centre. Any patient requiring admission or investigation at higher level of care must be transferred.

The clinic does provide accommodation.
Accommodation Description
Clean, private, furnished - locum housing w/ a full kitchen, laundry, TV, private phone, & WIFI. Some houses have a small workout area in the basement. Work-out facility can be accessed 24/7 at clinic as well as a brand new fully equipped gym.
Most Convenient Mode of Transportation
Locums can fly directly to Dease Lake from Vancouver, Nanaimo, Calgary, Prince George, Kelowna, Kamloops and Smithers on a chartered mining flight. Once on site there are clinic vehicles that can be used for work & recreation.

We have a community hall that hosts local events throughout the year. There is also a brand new gym with beautiful equipment in the BC Services Building, free for use by the community.

We have a gas station, post office, and local food spots: The Shack, Nympha’s Asian Food Eatery, and Northway Pizzeria. There’s also a library. In winter, we have an ice skating rink and a private outdoor wood-burning sauna for healthcare workers.
