Our team provides regular clinic, emergency, and inpatient services under one roof to a combined Nuxalk First Nation and non-indigenous community of approximately 2500 people. Clinic support staff provided. Bella Coola sits in a mountain valley at the end of a long, truly magnificent fjord, on the mainland coast of BC. It is 500 km north of Vancouver and 450 km west of Williams Lake. Supportive team environment; our physician group is always happy to provide support or review a case. You are never left truly alone! About the Clinic

Clinic Description

Clinic Composition

Five physicians, all part time. Staffed with 3 – 4 physicians at a time sharing 3 doctors’ offices/ 6 patient exam rooms. 10 acute beds and a 2 bed + trauma bay emergency department open 24/7. Your clinic appointments will be booked for 15-30 min

Local Resources

Lab, Xray, Pharmacy, Public Health, Physiotherapy, Telehealth, Home and Community Care, Mental Health resources including ICM team, Indigenous patient navigator. Nuxalk Nation Wellness Team with a social worker, nurses and peer support workers.

Emergency Framework

Ambulance, including Air Ambulance Applicants will require ACLS, ATLS and PALS or NRP certification to work in Emergency. If any of the certifications have expired, CARE certification can replace the expired certification

Call Expectations

1:4 sometimes 1:3 depending on the number of physicians available. Call is from 0800 to 0800. A physician is available for back up in case you need help with a case. Call may include covering either the Saturday or Sunday

On-site training the first morning. You will be provided with a link to the EMR before you arrive so you can practice on a mock patient. Online tutorial via CHR website available in advance of placement

Level of Support/Care and Policy

Welcoming Procedures

Prior to confirming the locum, you will be provided with an Orientation document, Locum FAQ and community Information document. Once you arrive, you will be met at the airport as there is no taxi service, taken on a brief tour of the community and settled into your apartment. You will have access to the clinic Jeep in case you want to do some sight-seeing

On-site full orientation first day (morning) with EMR training. Short clinic in the afternoon

The clinic does provide accommodation.

Accommodation Description

There are houses across from the hospital. If housing is restricted on availability, may have to share a large 4 bed/3 bath house. Internet is provided

Most Convenient Mode of Transportation

Pacific Coastal Airlines, BC Ferries, or drive but check out the video on the Bella Coola hill first as the last part of the road (65KM) can be a challenge for some.

Townsite Co-Op is open from 9 – 5.30 daily except Sundays The Shop-Easy in Hagensborg is open daily 9am – 7pm

Community Centre

Outdoor pool in the summer, outdoor ice rink in the winter, gym, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, rock climbing, kayaking. Some equipment is available to be borrowed, but check with the site first for availability.

Hotel/restaurant There are some food and coffee attractions which open depending on the time of year. Indigenous Store The Nuxalk Nation operates a store where you can buy traditional items and clothing embossed with Bella Coola and Nuxalk logos
