RSLP - Pediatrics Specialist needed for North Island Hospital, Comox Valley

Role and Facility Information

We are seeking crisis locum coverage for pediatric services at North Island Hospital Comox Valley.

This role consists of 24/7 on-call coverage for the duration of the locum. Responsibilities include:

Attendance at neonatal resuscitations and deliveries, as required

Emergency Department consultations for pediatric patients

Telephone advice to local primary care providers

Inpatient pediatric care

Urgent outpatient consultations, which may be assessed in hospital as needed

Coordination of tertiary/higher level of care transfers for acutely unwell patients or those requiring more intensive management.

This is a rural general pediatric role requiring comfort with neonatal stabilization, acute pediatric assessment, and independent decision-making in a resource-limited setting.

About the Clinic

Clinic Description

Clinic Composition

Hospital open 24 hrs

Urgent outpatient consultations may be assessed in the hospital Wellness Centre/Outpatient Department on an as-needed basis. There is no expectation to provide non-urgent or routine outpatient clinic coverage.

Local Resources

Hospital-based outpatient clinic (Wellness Centre) with access to Emergency Department support, inpatient pediatric beds, laboratory services, and diagnostic imaging. Collaboration with local primary care providers and perinatal team.

Emergency Framework

The Emergency Department is staffed 24/7 by designated Emergency Physicians. The locum pediatrician is consulted to assist with pediatric assessment, stabilization, and management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department.

Call Expectations

24/7 on-call coverage (home call) for the duration of the locum. Expected to be available for telephone consultation and to attend in person as required, including for neonatal resuscitations, Emergency Department assessments, and inpatient care.

Welcoming Procedures

Upon arrival, the locum physician will obtain a welcome package and hospital ID badge from the Security Desk (located near the Emergency Department). Orientation materials and site-specific information will be provided to support onboarding.

Orientation

Orientation will be provided by the local pediatric site lead(s), ideally in person, and will include a hospital walk-through where feasible.

If an in-person orientation is not possible prior to the start of the locum, an initial telephone orientation will be arranged, with a subsequent in-person walk-through coordinated with the site lead and/or local primary care colleagues as soon as possible.

Accommodation and car rental, if required, will be the responsibility of the Host physician or Health Authority for all ā€œCā€ and ā€œDā€ communities on the RSA Communities Designation list. LRBC will reimburse for travel to and from the locum community
